Artificial Intelligence Ethics: From Theory To Practice | "Artificial Intelligence Medical Imaging Ethics Manual" Released At The World Artificial Intelligence Conference
The "Artificial Intelligence Medical Imaging Ethics Manual" was officially released at the "Artificial Intelligence Innovation and Governance" Forum of the World Artificial Intelligence Conference on the morning of July 7, 2023!
VOL.2821
Artificial intelligence ethics is a major proposition for human society. With the emergence of a number of innovative application products, artificial intelligence ethical governance has entered a stage where it must move from principles to practice. In the medical field, scientific research, clinical practice and teaching have become the three important scenarios for the application of medical artificial intelligence. However, the application of medical artificial intelligence also brings many new ethical challenges: How to improve the robustness, explainability, fairness and credibility of medical artificial intelligence systems? How to protect patient privacy? How can medical workers avoid overreliance on smart technology?

To this end, an interdisciplinary team led by the China Association for Science and Technology-Fudan University Institute of Science and Technology Ethics and the Future of Humanity, Professor Wang Wangyu from the School of Philosophy of Fudan University, Professor Wang Yanfeng, Assistant Director of the Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, and Professor Tian Mei, Executive Director of the Human Phenome Research Institute at Fudan University and President of the World Molecular Imaging Society, conducted in-depth and detailed investigations and research, forming the important result "Artificial Intelligence Medical Imaging Ethics Manual". The "Manual" was officially released on the morning of July 7, 2023, at the "Artificial Intelligence Innovation and Governance" Forum of the World Artificial Intelligence Conference!

Li Ling, head of Nandu Digital Economic Governance Research Center, presided over the release ceremony. Professor Wang Guoyu, editor-in-chief of the "Artificial Intelligence Medical Imaging Ethics Handbook" and director of the China Association for Science and Technology-Fudan University Institute of Science and Technology Ethics and the Future of Humanity, introduced the content and publication background of the "Handbook". Professor Wang Yanfeng and Professor Zhang Jun, executive director of the Department of Radiology, Hongqiao Campus, Huashan Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University, conducted dialogue and discussions on important issues of ethical governance of artificial intelligence medical imaging.

"Artificial Intelligence Medical Imaging Ethics Handbook" is the crystallization of interdisciplinary cooperation between arts, sciences, medicine and engineering, and is the earliest research result at home and abroad to implement artificial intelligence ethics from theory to practice. The "Handbook" brought together more than 10 experts from philosophy, clinical medicine, computers, artificial intelligence, medical imaging, social sciences and other disciplines, and the compilation process took more than three years.
The "Handbook" focuses on the three main scientific and technological activity scenarios of scientific research, clinical practice and teaching. Through the perspective of the whole life cycle, it systematically analyzes the elements of artificial intelligence medical image-assisted diagnosis in each scenario and the potential ethical risks in the interaction with relevant stakeholders. It constructs a set of three-in-one ethical risk analysis framework of "multidisciplinary knowledge synthesis - multi-party interest perspective integration - multi-scenario and element interaction", presenting readers with a panoramic image of key ethical issues in the three major scenarios.

At the same time, the research team combed through a large number of cutting-edge research, policies, regulations and ethical guidelines in the fields of artificial intelligence and imaging medicine at home and abroad, conducted multiple surveys of development teams, visited many hospitals, and conducted large-scale questionnaire surveys and expert consultations to form practical and operable ethical guidelines for governments, volunteers, scientific researchers and other multiple entities.
The "Handbook" aims to enhance the moral sensitivity of practitioners and the public related to artificial intelligence medical imaging, and provide practitioners with a comprehensive, authoritative, and easy-to-understand ethical guide to help them fully understand the advantages and risks of artificial intelligence medical imaging, so as to more solidly protect the interests of patients in practical applications, more firmly build a bridge for artificial intelligence ethical principles from theory to practice, and promote the "people-oriented" integration of artificial intelligence technology into the medical imaging field to better benefit mankind.
Finally, the "Handbook" further combines ethical risks and best practice cases, provides policy points and cutting-edge research results on important issues, and vividly explains related issues to help readers better carry out ethical reflection and stimulate readers to think deeply about related issues.
The "Handbook" is headed by Academician Ning Guang, Dean of Ruijin Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, as the director of the expert committee. Academician He Jifeng of Tongji University, Wu Rong, Vice President of Huashan Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University, He Ping, Director of the Medical Engineering and Information Technology Department of Shanghai Shenkang Hospital Development Center, and other experts serve as committee members of the book.
Academician Ning Guang wrote a preface to this book and said in the preface: "I believe that the "Artificial Intelligence Medical Imaging Ethics Handbook" compiled by Professor Wang Guoyu will become an important starting point for discussions on related issues and contribute to promoting artificial intelligence medical imaging technology to better serve people's lives and health, promote medical fairness and justice, and benefit mankind. I wish readers of this book will benefit greatly from the reading process and continue to promote the progress and responsible development of artificial intelligence medical imaging in the days to come!"
The research team will continue to deepen this research and contribute more powerful support to the practice of artificial intelligence ethical governance in the country and Shanghai.
Before the release of the "Handbook", Professor Wang Guoyu also participated in the roundtable dialogue "What is Generative AI Changing?" and discussed the impact of emerging technologies on society with experts from companies and governments.
